Established in 1924, the $35,000 prize is regarded as Australia's richest and most prestigious award for emerging classical singers, with past recipients including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Dame Malvina Major and Jonathan Summers. Georgia is the first Cultural Trust grantee to be awarded this honour.
After making it through several competition rounds, Georgia competed in the final against a soprano, mezzo-soprano, baritone and tenor. Georgia’s winning performance included two arias: 'Caro nome' from Verdi's Rigoletto and 'Je veux vivre' from Gounod's Roméo et Juliette.
In 2017, Georgia was supported by the Cultural Trust to undertake three months of intensive vocal training in London with renowned Australian opera singer Yvonne Kenny.
The Herald Sun Aria prize provides a platform for early-career Australian opera singers to gain recognition and the means to invest in further artistic development. With the aid of the substantial prize, Georgia plans to pursue further study and professional development overseas.
Georgia is currently performing in Opera Australia’s Turandot in Melbourne and will be performing with Yvonne Kenny in August 2020 at the Sydney Town Hall.
